The London Club - a brief history London has a rich history of private members’ clubs, which originally started in the 18th Century as coffee houses, Clubs drew their members from specific areas of society, eg: political affiliation, sport, literature, gaming .The first clubs were exclusively male and provided a haven in the city away from the country estate, Clubs facilities included dining rooms, library, gaming rooms, studies and bedrooms. Clubs were named after their founders eg: White’s, Boodle’s, Brook’s; their principal operating influence eg : Traveller’s, Overseas, Jockey or their location eg: Berkeley, Portman, Mayfair. London has over 120 private members club with 45 being located in Mayfair and St. James’ alone. in the late 20th Century a new style of club began to emerge, one that drew its members from “all walks of life”, included women as equal members, allowed the discussion of business and a have relaxed dress code and Devonshire Club will lead this renaissance and cultivate an environment for members to relax, have fun and socialise in fabulous surroundings.
