WEST WATERFORD

Exploring the River Blackwater Dromana

Camphire H

ome to the International Horse Trials and Country Fair each year, Camphire house is also part of the history of West Waterford. There was originally a castle built at Camphire as far back as the 8th century but it was destroyed in the mid 1600s. The current house was built in 1843. This year the Horse Trials and Country Fair will run from 27th – 31st July and is not just about horses, there is lots to see including the Shopping Village with artisan food and crafts stalls.

D

romana House and Gardens has been in

the Villiers-Stuart family for the last 800 years. The house offers self catering accommodation and is part of the Waterford Garden Trail. You can also visit the nearby Dromana bridge which spans the Finisk river, a tributary of the Blackwater. Originally built from wood and papier mache to greet the owner of the Dromana Estate, Henry Villiers-Stuart and his wife on returning from their honeymoon in 1826. The couple were so enchanted with the gate it was reconstructed in stone in later years.
