SIX YEARS LATER... SUPPORTING OUTREACH IN RURAL AREAS OF HAITI

“Ye that fear the LORD, praise him… For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; nei- ther hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard… The meek shall eat and be satis- fied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him… All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.” – Psalm 22:23-27

WME Partners & Supporters,

IN JANUARY 2010, AN EARTHQUAKE RAVAGED THE SMALL ISLAND NATION OF HAITI, LEAVING MASSIVE DE- STRUCTION AND DEATH IN ITS WAKE. There was an outpouring of support to Haitians affected by the disaster.

Six years later, the efforts of most humanitarian organizations have turned elsewhere, and media coverage has largely shifted away from Haiti. But there is still so much that needs to be done, particularly in the poor, rural areas miles away from Port au Prince. In the days following the dis- aster, these villages received far less public attention and humanitarian aid.

In 2016, Haiti remains the poorest country in the West- ern Hemisphere, as well as one of the poorest in the world. This small nation has a population of around 10.5 million. Approximately 80% of Haitians live under the poverty line, and at least 54% live in abject poverty (less than $1.90 US per day). But that startling number soars to 74.9% within rural areas outside Port au Prince.

We can’t dismiss these facts as mere statistics on a page — These numbers represent real, human lives suf- fering under the weight of extreme poverty. And as is so often the case, too many children are carrying this bur- den with nowhere to turn. It is sobering to consider that one third of Haiti’s population are children 14 years old and younger.

Some of the children who need our help to elimate thirst, hunger and disease.

In Fondue, a water well project would bring a safe, clean and secure water supply to an entire community. Near the water project is a church, orphanage and school which educates 242 local children. They have long been without a reliable source of safe water. The well will not only meet their needs, but further Christian outreach by strengthening the relationship between the com- munity and missionaries.
