There’s nothing boring about plain bearings at Bowman International

It’s a small component with a big responsibility, but there’s more to a bearing than meets the eye. With more than 7,000 products in stock, Bowman International is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of bearings and sintered components to original equipment manufacturers, stockists and distributors. Here are five compelling reasons why.

1. Pushing boundaries: Innovative products Like any manufacturer, product innovation is critical to ensure that Bowman continues to meet the demands of its customers. The company has invested heavily in research and development in recent years and we are really starting to see the benefit as an industry. New materials have been introduced, along with new techniques for manufacturing, testing and fault analysis. The latest – and perhaps the most revolutionary – example of Bowman’s

commitment to product innovation is the BowMet® range of plain, rolled bearings. Marking arguably the biggest advance in plain bearings in over 70 years, the BowMet® range offers a higher load capacity and longer life than comparable bearings, together with outstanding heat, speed and corrosion capabilities. Its static load of 820N/mm2 is incomparable for plain rolled bearings. This means that Bowman are innovating plain bearings in a number of applications

where previously only rolling element bearings could be used. The advantage of the BowMet range is that it results in improved performance, higher reliability and an overall more cost-effective solution than rolling element bearings and most importantly overcomes the corrosion problems encountered when using chrome steel bearings. Manufactured from the ToughMet® alloy, developed by Materion in the USA, it can

deliver increased reliability, reduced downtime, fewer warranty claims and lower maintenance costs for a host of applications across many sectors. All with the increased flexibility, reduced wastage and no minimum order quantities that come with standard rolled bearings.

2. Bringing manufacturing back to the UK Bowman has invested heavily into creating a manufacturing facility at its headquarters in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, which means it can offer a faster and more efficient end-to- end service on larger, non-standard sized wrapped bearings and machined bearings. Housing various cutting-edge machines designed to work on a variety of materials,

the onsite facility is dedicated to creating non-standard sized prototypes and fulfilling special or urgent orders. Bowman can deliver orders manufactured in the UK in days, rather than weeks or months; which is of untold benefit to many customers.

3. Bearing test machine Bowman have recently developed a brand new comparative testing machine which can recreate the conditions of a customer’s application. This is an invaluable tool for engineers as they will be able to have complete trust in the fact that the bearing they
