Page 22- The News, March 3, 2016 Summer Camps, Programs and Activities Travellers Rest offers summer adventure, mystery and fun
Travellers Rest’s award-win- ning summer camps have long been a hidden treasure, provid- ing a summer of adventure, mys- tery, creativity and fun. With a focus on history, these summer camps keep campers returning year after year. Loving history is a plus for any of the Travellers Rest camps but not a prerequisite and parents will be pleased to find there is a camp suitable for just about any child. A great introductory camp
to Travellers Rest is the Time Travelers Camp (May 31st-June 3rd). Campers ages 7 to 14 will embark on a journey through time, exploring 1,000 years of Tennessee history from the ancient Mississippian Indians to early frontier history and from the Overton family to the Civil War. Miss Mary’s Academy is a unique adventure for girls age 10- 16 (July 11th-15th). This is a his- torical immersion camp in which the girls will dress and act the part of a young lady attending a female academy in the year 1816. The camp will teach the subjects typical of a girl’s academy of the
day. Campers will spend time learning manners, etiquette, proper speech, penmanship and letter writing, dancing, painting, sewing and a few other skills nec- essary for an early 19th century lady to know. There is no other camp in town…or just about any- where that will be dealing with this time period in this fashion and we are so excited about it! Space for this camp is limited to only 14 participants and it will fill up fast. The Junior Docent Training & Leadership Camp (June 6th-10th & week of choice) is a great sum- mer camp for kids ages 9 to 14 to go behind the scenes of Nashville’s oldest historic house museum and experience history from the inside out. Junior Docents learn about museum work, historic interpretation, preservation and leadership while also fostering a commit- ment to community service. Camp includes a second week of their choice, plus 50 percent off of one Travellers Rest summer camp and 15 percent off any other sessions.
Civil War Adventure Camp
(June 13th-17th & July 25th-29th) tells the story of the Battle of Nashville in the setting of General Hood’s headquarters. From soldier to civilian life and haversacks to hardtack this camp is a great introduction to life in Tennessee during the American Civil War. Campers ages 10 to 16 can delve even deeper into Civil War history at our newest camp, Civil War Officer Training Academy (July 5th-9th). Become a soldier and learn what life was like on and off the battlefield; from military drills to field sur- gery, experience your own adven- ture! This new camp is an immersion experience in which campers can don their soldier’s gear and train to be officers. On Friday evening campers will be able to bring along a parent for the academy camp-out and com- plete their training on Saturday with a soldier’s campfire break- fast and an officer’s graduation ceremony.
A summer favorite for staff and campers alike is War of 1812 Adventure (July 11th-15th).
Campers will travel back in time when soldiers, Native Americans, pioneers, and fron- tier heroes fought to build a new nation. Follow in the footsteps of adventurers such as Red Eagle, Davy Crockett, Sam Houston, and Andrew Jackson. Learn mili- tia drills, hear stories of naval heroes and frontier legends, make a tater torch and have a flour bomb fight at this staff favorite camp! For the mystery-minded,
Travellers Rest offers the unique History’s Mysteries Summer Camp (June 27th-July 1st & July 18th-22nd) for ages 7 to 14. Every museum harbors a mystery … an unexpected artifact, a haunting tale or perhaps something far stranger. Travel on an adventur- ous journey through some of Nashville’s most interesting museums and gather clues to solve the mystery. History is full of mysteries waiting for you … become your own history detec- tive! Perhaps our most popular camp, available spaces book up quickly. Stitching History Camp (July
18th-22nd) explores the fashions of the past while learning the timeless art of hand-sewing, drafting patterns, measuring and even creating your own his- torical fashion piece. Tennessee Tales & Legends Camp (June 20th-24th) for campers ages 7 to 14 brings the foothills and moun- tains of Tennessee to life with the lore of frontier heroes, creepy critters and spine-tingling sto- ries. Challenge your imagination with the historical happenings of the mysterious, the curious, the fantastical and the just plain weird. Hear tall tales, seek hid- den treasure, go on our famous cryptid scavenger hunt, learn the mysterious art of invisible ink and along the way write your own legendary tale.
