SURFACE/UNDERGROUND + WHY NOT THEATRE COMPANY LATE COMPANY

It is safe to assume that playwright Jordan Tannahill is a name we should get accustomed to hearing.

At the young age of 27, he has impressively taken the art world by storm, described by Theatre Critic Kelly Nestruck of The Globe and Mail as “the poster child of a new generation.” Tannahill’s extensive body of work in film, theatre and visual art has led to national and international acclaim and the 2014 Governor General’s Award for Drama. Currently, he is in the process of creating new plays for Canadian Stage, UK’s Panic Lab, Necessary Angel/bluemouth Inc. and the National Theatre School of Canada; an impressive roster of international collaborations for the emerging playwright.

Surface/Underground and Why Not Theatre are bringing his award-winning production of Late Company to Robertson Theatre at the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre as part of a highly anticipated Ontario tour. Late Company is a heart- wrenching drama that centers around two families that meet for dinner in hopes of healing. Instead, the evening quickly unravels, horrible things are felt and said and the ugly side of grief is displayed for all to see. The show was written partially as a response

to the suicide of an Ottawa teen, who tragically took his own life in 2011 after being harassed mercilessly by his peers. A timely and timeless meditation on a parent’s struggle to comprehend the monstrous and unknown in their child.

Late Company is a biting revelation about teen bullying, homophobia, suicide and the true horrors of losing a child. The celebrated play is brought to life by the talents of Liam Sullivan, Rosemary Dunsmore, John Cleland, Richard Greenblatt and Fiona Highet along with the brilliant direction of Peter Pasyk. Skilled performances bring to life Tannahill’s dynamic characters who are embarrassed and broken, while being deeply relatable. Audiences can expect to share in dark laughter, pregnant silences and poignant moments of hope and love from this critically acclaimed production.

Late Company was originally produced at Toronto’s SummerWorks Performance Festival in 2013 and quickly became the must-see hit of the festival with NOW Magazine prizes for “Best New Play,” “Best Production,” “Best Director” and “Best Ensemble.”
