What you need to know about temporary buildings

e all need space. It is a need that most businesses have at some point. We take space for


granted – until we haven’t got enough of it, when it starts to impact on operations, when it costs us money, wastes time, and loses us customers. Let me illustrate my point with three scenarios: 1. You are a manufacturer. Business is good. The production side of your business is keeping pace with customer demand but, as the market for a new product begins to grow exponentially, you are struggling to house the product onsite before it is transported to retailers. So you rent some warehouse space offsite. It’s not as close as you’d like to your site but it does the job – except when you consider you are not only paying for warehouse rental, but transport, double handling, extra staff, security, not to mention a lot of lost time…


2. Your business is logistics. It’s a highly competitive market so you need every advantage you can get. You operate day and night, in all weathers, but lack of protection for goods and staff during loading means you are losing valuable time because of heavy rain or high winds. If stock gets damaged because


of bad weather the implications will be major – both financial, in terms of customer compensation, and in terms of reputation. What would be the benefits of weatherproofing all your loading operations?


3. Your existing facilities are no longer fit for purpose – they may need an extension, or a total overhaul. But you can’t simply shut up shop while the redevelopment takes place. You may have customers or service users who rely on accessing your facilities. Or, if yours is a retail environment, you can’t risk the redevelopment having a negative impact on your business, either financially or in terms of customers’ brand perception. How do you keep it “business as usual”?


Each scenario shows a different set of circumstances influencing the business in question – different problems and different criteria for a solution. They show that there is no “standard” temporary building customer or standard building use. And because most Facilities Managers seeking to solve a space problem, have never bought or hired a temporary building before, here is a quick guide to the key questions:


How is a temporary building defined and when does it become “permanent”? A temporary building describes a non- permanent structure, built to your specification from an anodized aluminium frame with galvanized steel fixings – guaranteeing the strength and durability to work in any environment. A range of roof, flooring and door options are available as well as a wide range of more bespoke offerings to give you a solution which meets your needs 100%. Temporary buildings are not to be confused with marquees which are very lightweight structures with a canvas covering, suitable for very short term usage, usually for events and hospitality.
