As 2015 comes to a close, we can’t help but reflect on the past twelve months. It’s truly been a standout year for the bedding industry, with major market introductions, consolidations and expansions making a significant impact on the way people are buying and selling mattresses.

his was a noteworthy year for Sleep Retailer as well. We celebrated our 20th anniversary with a new name and a fresh look, injecting our steadfast indus- try coverage with an exciting, modern look. We’re proud to begin our 21st year with our biggest issue yet!

As the marketplace continues to evolve, it’s been exciting to observe the differ- ent ways manufacturers have risen to the challenge. In this issue, we’ve spotlighted a number of the burgeoning new players alongside the many trusted industry lead- ers—highlighting true quality, honest manu- facturing and consummate support. Our cover story this winter takes a closer look at Kingsdown Inc. and its upscale Di- amond Royale Collection. Armed with over 110 years of history, the company has set itself apart in the industry with a resolute approach to quality control and technical innovation. Kingsdown operates with its finger on the pulse of the industry, utilizing its broad reserve of market and scientific research, along with input from its dealers and partners. By combining locally sourced materials and American hand craftsman- ship with an opulent look and feel, the new Diamond Royale line-up offers retailers the competitive price point and compelling sales story they need to succeed. This issue looks at a number of creative ways to help retailers better communicate with their customers. With strategic brand- ing and packaging, Protect-A-Bed is help- ing retailers make benefits-oriented sales

while companies like Thread Experiment and Ergo Sleep Centers are helping retail- ers target specific consumer demographics. Colonial’s in-depth market research helps inform its customized top-of-bed programs to increase sales, while the Specialty Sleep Association’s new BEDFAX Mattress Con- tents labeling program delivers critical in- formation to the consumer. Bedgear’s new interactive “Pillow ID” online tool expands the reach of its highly successful personal- ized pillow fittings.

Of course, these sales and marketing tools can only be successful when grounded in quality products and true benefits. This is- sue highlights a wide range of new bedding offerings. Key collection expansions and up- dates from Englander, Simmons Beautyrest and Restonic offer exciting new features and benefits. With new entry-level options from Naturepedic and Noctova and Spring Air’s new luxury Chattam & Wells brand, re- tailers have a variety of thoughtful mattress options across all price points. The market for bedding accessories and add-on products continues to expand as well. Building on the growing interest in ana- lytic, integrative technology—and responding to the sleep epidemic that continues to af- fect most adults—we’ve highlighted a num- ber of innovative sleep tracking devices for this issue’s Product Focus.

If this issue is any indication, it looks like 2016 is shaping up to be just as eventful as 2015. —Christopher Schriever @SleepRetailer 58 Sleep Retailer / Winter 2016
