President’s Message

Dear Vermont Music Educators, I hope this journal finds you well and healthy after

what I am sure was a busy concert season. We are all about to finish our first half of the school year and I am positive that you have worked very hard to give your students the comprehensive music education the deserve. If you have not heard, on December 10th, the “Every

Child Achieves Act of 2015” (S. 1177) was signed by the President of the United States. This is GREAT news for our profession. Please visit the following website for a full legislative analysis of all key music and arts provisions of the Every Child Achieves Act. http://www.nafme.org/wp-content/ files/2015/11/NAfME-ESSA-Comprehensive- Analysis-2015.pdf I would like to congratulate our Conference leaders

Christy Papandrea, Dana Thomas, Kristin Cinometti, Stephanie Weigand, Rob Roth, Peter & Christine Roach and Steffen Parker for hosting a fabulous music educators conference at the Killington Grand. Everything was wonderful and I am already looking forward to the Fall of 2016. Did you know that you can send in a proposal for next year right now? Please complete a session proposal form by April 15, 2016. I would like to give a big round of applause to our Hall of Fame Music Educators! Outstanding New Music Educator: Riley Goodemote-Leland and Grey High School Music Educator of the Year: Eric Bushey-BFA. St. Albans Special Recognition: Bruce McRae (Retired) & Frank Whitcomb (Retired) In this journal you will now find district reports and

the state report. This is so you know what is going on in our state/music district. Feel free to contact your president to give them a heads up on your programs and if you need any support throughout the year. It is imperative that all music teachers attend their district meetings, even if you are an elementary/ middle school teacher. Our district meetings are a great way to meet other music teachers, get support and give ideas on how we can strengthen our profession here in Vermont.

Fondly,

Mary is band director at Mount Mansfield Union High School in Jericho, VT.
