Polio Plus – Curry Evening

Four days after World Polio Day, on Wednesday October 28th, the Faringdon & District Rotary Club made its now annual pilgrimage to the Snooty Mehmaan to set in train the customary assault on the self-imposed target of £1,000 towards the Fund. Management at the Snooty end had declared 85 settings as the maximum number, a target Ally Lee splendidly reached with some ease, such ease indeed that there was a waiting list to take the place of late fall-outs. The customary assault takes the form of gargantuan consumption of the culinary Eastern goodies - snap, crackle and poppadom - washed down with appropriately sourced beer, or other cheering liquids. Thus, welcomed by President Lynda, and informed by her impressive tidings of Polio Plus successes in the field, the company set to with gusto.

Progress in polio eradication has just seen the continent of Africa clear of new cases for one year – but it takes more than one year’s evidence to confirm this triumph. This leaves just two countries in the world reporting new cases in the last twelve months – Pakistan and Afghanistan. And then after eradication of polio comes the plus element, the creation of infrastructure and partnerships to ensure it does not re-emerge. It would be only the second time in history that a human disease had been eradicated from the world were that objective to be achieved.

Back at the Snooty, the Bottle of Champagne for the impresario responsible for raising the largest party on the evening - 27 - was received, not for the first time, by the Member recently relieved of his duties in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, a sop to assuage his personal sorrows arising from a quarter-final at Twickenham. The follower up, with a commendable round

dozen in his team, was marking his membership debut at the occasion; an even newer member, Sally circulated round the tables with raffle tickets and persuasive charm, aided by Phil.

All in all another very enjoyable and

worthy evening was appreciated by all present, with due thanks to those members who brought it about thanks to their hard work behind the scenes and, of course, the Snooty Mehmaan staff.
