New York Doctor Creates Device To Make Youth Football Safer Every year dozens of football players suffer head and neck
injuries that can plague them the rest of their lives, some are paralyzed or even die from a broken neck sustained during a game. New York’s Dr. Patrick Kerr explains, “Most uni- forms expose the neck of players, leaving a space between the bottom of the helmet and the top of the shoulder pads. Without protection on the neck, the football player is absorbing a lot of those forces directly to the neck. This increases their susceptibility to axial load - the forces being distributed from the head (during impact), into the neck, and down towards the body.”

Dr. Kerr spent more than a decade developing a protective device that is put into standard issued shoulder pads and turns them into a system that engages the helmet as a player braces for impact - distributing the weight of the col- lision to the shoulders - reducing up to 58% of the forces to the neck during a collision, therefore preventing some injuries.
News for Parents of Tonsillectomy Patients
A study published from the July issue of Pediatrics fi nds that there has been an increase in post-surgical visits among tonsil- lectomy patients due to pain despite rising adherence to guide- lines for surgical care among children’s hospitals. One possible reason for the increase in revisits due to pain is a recent FDA recommendation to eliminate codeine for pain management in tonsillectomy patients, resulting in a change in practice and lack of comfort with alternatives, such as ibuprofen. Accord- ing to these new guidelines, antibiotics have also been elimi- nated, although is usually not a cause of pain. Tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgeries performed on children. More than half-a-million tonsillectomies are performed an- nually in children ages 15 and younger in the United States. Be sure to follow the post-surgical, in-home care instructions provided by your child’s doctor to appropriately manage pain as soon as the child is discharged from the hospital. -Children’s Hospital Association
