Dear Teacher

Expert Advice to Help All Children Succeed in School By Peggy Gisler and Marge Eberts

QUESTION: All I see everywhere is parents either talking, texting, or searching for messages on their cellphones in the presence of their children. No one seems to talk to children anymore. How is this affecting children? -For More Personal Attention

ANSWER: There has been very little research on the effects of adults (parents and caregivers) being tied to their phones in the pres- ence of kids. However, one study noted that children in fast-food restaurants reacted either by entertaining themselves - often with tablets or other mobile devices - or simply misbehaving.

Since the development of language in young children is strongly dependent on adult-child conversation, it only makes sense for par- ents and caregivers to put away their cellphones and other devices when children are around. 

Every week for more than 28 years, Peggy and Marge have answered the questions of readers in newspapers across the country, as writers of the “Dear Teacher” column—syndicated by King Features. They have offered solid advice on such parental concerns as phonics, standardized testing, dyslexia, grades, homework, college admissions, and much more. It is their desire to help all parents make the educational experience of their children as successful as possible.
