NH Artist James Aponovich Donates Painting, Prints To Help Raise Funds to Restore Yankee Flyer Diner Mural

Are you a fan of New Hamp-

shire Artist Laureate James Aponovich’s work, but don’t have the budget to afford one of his paintings, or even one of his less costly artist’s prints? Now is your chance. To sup- port the restoration of the Yankee Flyer Diner mural on Main Street in Nashua, NH, Aponovich has donated to City Arts Nashua his concept oil painting of the diner that he submitted as part of the contest to select the artist for the mural 20 years ago. City Arts Nashua is now selling a limited edition of 100 high-qual- ity giclee prints of the painting, each signed and numbered by the artist, for $250 each. The fi ne art prints are made on photo rag archival watercolor paper with Ultrachrome archival inks. On Thursday, July 30 at PRG Rugs in downtown Nashua hosted a Mural Resto- ration Reception. Aponovich signed the prints and greeted the public.

Streets. It is the only outdoor mural of a classic American diner in the United States. Aponovich will be re- storing the mural in his Peterborough studio once the funds are raised. “All profi ts from the sale of the prints will go to the Mural Restora- tion Fund,” Hersh explained. “We are grateful to James for his generous donation.”

The budget to restore the massive mural is $53,000. The sale of Yankee Flyer Diner prints will raise $20,000; the remaining funding will come from donations and grants.

The reception

included a display of Yankee Flyer Diner memorabilia. To make the offer even more exciting, when all the prints are sold, the 100 numbers will go into a bowl, and Aponovich will pull out one lucky number. The owner of the print with that number will win the original 12 x25 inch oil on canvas painting, valued at $15,000.

“This is an unusual opportunity to acquire an Aponovich print at a very affordable

price, while supporting the restoration of a public art treasure,” commented Kathy Hersh, president of City Arts Nashua. “With the bonus of a one-in-one hundred chance to own his painting, we expect the prints to go fast,” she added. To place your order before the prints are all gone, go to www.cityartsnashua.org, print out the order form and send it in with your check.

After all the prints are sold, everyone who buys a print will be invited to a reception hosted by Michael Buckley at Surf Restau- rant, where the lucky print number will be drawn by Aponovich. City Arts Nashua is currently raising funds to restore the 10 x 27 foot historic mural, installed in 1997. The mural depicts a busy, mid-century street scene around the diner, which was located where Citizen’s Bank now stands on the corner of Main and West Hollis

The Mural Restoration Committee, formed earlier this year, is work- ing toward raising the funds by the end of the Summer/early Fall. Members include Co-Chairs Judith Carlson, VP of City Arts Nashua and Fouad Mahfuz, owner of PRG Rugs in Nashua; Michael George, owner of Charron Medical Services and the build- ing where the mural is located; Alderman Jim Donchess representing the Nashua Arts Commission; Jill Queenan, owner of Mind Launch Media in Nashua; Paul Shea, Execu- tive Director of Great American Downtown, Nashua; and Kathy Hersh, President of City Arts Nashua. Meri Goyette and Sy Mahfuz, both members of the original Yankee Flyer Diner mural committee in 1996, serve as advisors.
