Fall bulbs for spring beauty

After a long, cold winter we are

generally scoping out greenhouses and catalogues to get our flower fix. You may be dying to get your fingers in the dirt, but before you get a chance to get your fingers dirty, some of these spring beauties will be bursting through the snow and frosty mornings to delight and amaze you. But, you need to plant them this fall first!

Allium Zone: 3-9 Height: 30-91 cm (1-3 ft.) Bloom time: Late spring to early summer. Colours: Pink, purple and white.

Growing conditions: They prefer full sun and well-drained soil, but some species can tolerate shade.

Planting: Plant at a depth of four times the diameter of the bulb, smaller alliums should be planted 8-10 cm (3-4 in.) apart while larger varieties require at least 20 cm (8 in.).

Special notes: A member of the onion genus, alliums often have an onion odour and taste. Two common varieties, perfect for the garden are A. cristophii and A. giganteum.

Chionodoxa Zone: 3-4 Height: 10-15 cm (under 6 in.) Bloom time: Early spring. Colours: Blue, white and pink. Growing conditions: Plants require a full to half day of sun.

Planting: Plant bulbs 8 cm (3 in.) deep and 6-8 cm (2-3 in.) apart.

Special notes: These small starry flowers produce some of the nicest blues and naturalize well in gardens. Do not cut down foliage after blooming as the leaves need to collect sunlight in order to strengthen themselves for winter.

Crocus Zone: 3-7 Height: Under 15 cm (6 in.) Bloom time: Early spring. Colours: Purple, blue, yellow and white.

Growing Conditions: Plant in full sun. Crocuses prefer a gritty or sandy, well-drained soil.

Planting: Plant 13 cm (5 in.) deep, but plant them deeper in sandy soils.

Special notes: Crocuses thrive in cold temperatures. They can be planted in the grass but do not cut them until their leaves turn yellow. Try them under creeping phlox or mat-forming thymes as they will come up through ground-hugging plants.
