THE BIG PICTURE

PROJECT DALI CREATIVE AREA, YUNNAN PROVINCE, CHINA

Architect: PWD Architects, Beijing Builder: Yunnan Construction Engineering Group Opens: 2016

This mixed-use creative complex from PWD Architects will be arranged around a central green space at ground level, combining existing terrain with landscaped design. The south building will include a conference centre, retail spaces and food and beverage outlets, including a high-end Chinese restaurant. The north building will house exhibition space, media rooms and multi-occupancy offices. Adjacent will be a hotel and spa. A later phase is to include belvedere-style commercial buildings. The complex has been stepped into the landscape, following the natural change in levels. This offers the best views across the Yunnan hillsides, and reduces environmental impact. Alternating interior and green spaces create easily accessible patios and shaded terraces. Marcel Holmberg, partner-in-charge at PWD said: “Maintaining scale with the landscape is not easy, and not the place for thoughtless interventions.” The team has used a stacked bar

construction system anchoring the building to the terrain, using local stone and timber. The pared-back facade will frame views towards the province. The design aims for quality spaces, enhanced by landscaped areas with an intimate relationship with nature.
