THE WALLS Explore

No visit to Chester is complete without a walk around the most complete city wall circuit in the country.

The two miles of ancient ramparts were originally part of the defences built by the Roman Empire 2000 years ago to protect the Fortress of Deva.

They were extended by the Anglo-Saxons, strengthened by the Norman invaders, battered by Cromwell’s forces during the English Civil War, restored by Georgian affluence and turned into a delightful promenade by the Victorians. Join over 3 million people who walk along the city walls every year.

A short section of the walls will be closed for a few months for refurbishment work; there is a detour from the Eastgate Clock to Chester Cathedral Bell Tower.

Arriving at the newly repaired King Charles Tower, look out for artist John Donnelly, who is more familiar to visitors by the Eastgate Clock where he has been painting for the past 20 years. Famous for his quirky paintings of Chester incorporating Dr Who characters, John has moved along the walls during the refurbishment of the clock to take up residence at the tower. As a long- time Chester resident, John has an intimate knowledge of the city and its walls which he uses to good effect in his art, capturing some of the most beautiful and memorable local scenes.

Continue along the wall walk, following the line of the Shropshire Union canal on your right, to reach the highest point of the circuit. Here you can visit City Walls Books and Music, Chester’s only antiquarian and second hand book shop, research the history of your surname at Edges Arms or browse for gifts at Pemberley’s. Alternatively, relax with afternoon tea at Tea on the Wall before continuing on to complete your tour of the walls.
