President’s Message by Christine Steigerwald, MBA, RHIA
I cannot believe that we are less than one month away from our Annual Meeting! Where did this last year go? It seems like it was just yesterday when our Board was planning our transition meeting and reviewing our strategic plan. I guess it is true…”time flies when you are having fun.” Some would disagree, but for
those of us who have been active on the Board or as a Committee member or Chairperson, this is a very rewarding experience. I will continue to encourage everyone to get involved and stay involved. I was so very pleased to see all of the people who stepped forward to be placed on the ballot. How exciting to see new faces and new names!! As we begin our new association year, we will need even more people for our Committee Chairs and membership. We welcome everyone!
As you know, ICD-10 is on the horizon for October 1st and even though the SGR repeal did not contain any language to delay ICD-10 we need to continue to remain vigilant. Proponents of ICD-10 will now turn their attention to our appropriation bills making their way through Congress to make sure another delay is not attempted. As of May 4th, an additional House Bill (#2126) was introduced to halt the implementation of ICD-10 by “prohibiting the Secretary of Health and Human Services from replacing ICD-9 with ICD-10”. We need to continue to stay in contact with Members of Congress until such time that ICD-10 is fully implemented. Lynn Thomas Gordon has urged members to “continue to help us educate our physician community, work on advocacy for no delay, and help our organization be prepared for the October 1st implementation.” Our Advocacy Committee, led by Ashley Hendry and Julie Starr, have been actively involved in this grassroots advocacy campaign and will continue these efforts. Thank you Ashley and Julie for a job well done!
We have a dynamic group of speaker presentations lined up for our Annual meeting June 4-6 at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort. We will
follow our same format with Thursday and Friday devoted to a multitude of HIMS topics and Saturday will focus on coding and ICD- 10 readiness. Our AHIMA President, Cassi Birnbaum will be our keynote speaker, Congressman Paul Gosar will also be speaking and we will be fortunate to have Linda Kloss present “Information Governance”. We are looking forward to seeing all of you as we officially kick-off our new association year.
