SANTA ROSA, CA, ~ Some- thing is wonderful about a cool breeze against your warm skin. May in the garden is a sheer delight; so many flowers are in luscious bloom even though we didn’t get substantial ‘April showers’. We’re learning to live responsibly with drought and Climate Change. Some of us are planting more tough natives and becoming wiser garden- ers and those who can’t garden are getting weekly deliveries of organic farm fresh produce or taking the ‘fam’ to the farmer’s markets.

Although evocative, fragrant freesias have long faded and there is another chapter opening in your garden. Here are some of my ‘must have’ perennials to

include in your well. . . ‘must have list!’ Need I say more? My newest favorite ‘must

have’ is Clove Currant/Ribes odoratum boasting a spicy scent of clove fragrance wafting across the yard and edible sweet currants, for you, for the birds and the very nervous squirrels. Clove currant is native to the Midwest although it’s related to the California native, Ribes au- reum, also called Golden Cur- rant. It is an erect deciduous shrub 3 to 6 feet tall and wide. In earliest spring it is covered with small bright yellow clove scented flowers with red fruit following, turning black as they ripen. Check out other varieties of currants for your garden. Round and crisp, sweet and

pears’ because of their firm tex- ture. The main ingredient for a warm, pear tart or paired with cheeses such as Gouda, Robus- to, or Rum Runner according to cheese aficionado Jacob Chaney at Whole Foods Marketplace Cheese department. Cheese is perfect to add to your basket of marvelous picnic essentials. Tulbaghia, from South Africa, is an edible garlic flavored plant with straight evergreen leaves. Tall stems 1-2 feet tall produce clusters of small trumpet shaped flowers perfect for topping sal- ads, stir fries and handsome bordering beds in the garden. I like the white flowers but there are other varieties with pink or violet flowers and variegated leaves too. They grow thick in easy to divide clumps and are very hardy and well behaved. Winter Iris, (Iris unguicu- laris) has captured my heart. Blooming from November to March they are a welcome sight that time of year. Rare and pre- cious, with a delicate romantic appeal, their blossoms are soft violet-tinted blue with a beard- less fall of veined yellow. They
