Jolly Hockey Sticks ... Around The World in 80 + Days
Our member Ann Lloyd was the speaker at the lunchtime meeting on Thursday 21st August.... The photo shows her sitting at the bar holding a hockey stick that one might have expected to be a prop for her talk, but no, this was just to give to Carole Roberts who wanted it to complete her “St Trinians” outfit. Hopefully we shall publish a photo of Carole in a gymslip outfit in a future issue!!
Ann’s talk was about her experience of the things she saw and events on her round-the-world trip earlier this year. It took 114 days, you might think a cruise ship would beat Phileas Foggs’ famous 80 day bal- loon circumnavigation, but Ann seems to have gone at a far more leisurely pace with many interesting stops. It was a fascinating talk as she painted an accurate picture of the many amazing places and sights, she also admitted striking up an acquaintance with a gentleman who became her companion on many excursions but he had to leave the ship to fly home at Singapore. She left us guessing as to whether there was romance in the air but after he left the rumour onboard ship was that some lovers had had a tiff and the man had flown home. The vote of thanks was given by David Outen who could verify much of what Ann had said as he had visited many of the places whilst in the Merchant Navy. Ann didn’t say how much the trip cost but fortunately David had been on full pay to go there.
Ed. Member Resigns
Gordon Cumming has decided to relocate back to Scotland. It is understood this is for health reasons and therefore he is not renewing his Rotary membership.
We have benefited from and enjoyed his fellowship and the contribution to our club’s activities and wish him well.
