£2.6m investment in Swan Pool and Leisure Centre

Aylesbury Vale District Council’s (AVDC) Swan Pool and Leisure Centre is undergoing a £2.6m transformation following an investment by the local authority and a £500,000 grant from Sport England.

Swan Pool opened in 1996 and the project, which began on 16 February 2015, will be completed by January 2016.

Balfour Beatty has been appointed to carry out the refurbishment and work will be completed in stages to minimise disruption.

Enhancements will include an updated and enlarged gym featuring the latest interactive Precor CV equipment, Watt Bikes, Total Gym GTS, Power Plate machines and Precor strength kit as well as a new two-storey RockBox climbing facility and an extended changing village.

With the extra space and new facilities, it is hoped that the membership base at the centre, which is managed by Everyone Active, will be increased to 1,600 and overall year-on-year footfall by 5%.

Innovative ‘cave’ studio debuts

Councillor Howard Mordue, Cabinet Member for Leisure at AVDC commented: “These are exciting times for the Swan Pool and Leisure Centre. The improvements will establish the centre as a first class facility for health and wellbeing that can help people of all ages and abilities achieve their fitness goals.”

An innovative boutique studio concept has launched in London’s Soho area.

Called Urban Cave, the studio can cater for just two clients at one time and currently runs around 80 one-to-one sessions a week.

Suitable for personal training, Pilates and sports therapy, the 1,000sq ft studio is owned by husband and wife team Brett Durney and Sandra Calva and uses the MYZONE® monitoring system.

The studio is being marketed as a premium facility that serves people of all ages and abilities, including those with injuries. As Durney explains, the decision to incorporate MYZONE® into their offering was an easy one: “We are a specialist facility and people are paying a premium for our services. They expect us to offer the latest technology like MYZONE®. We wouldn’t be without it.”

Following a £500,000 refurbishment, the Blackshots gym in Essex has been reopened by Impulse Leisure.

The revamp was undertaken after a GYMetrix survey carried out in 2014 found that members and local people wanted more cable resistance kit and more free weights as well as more state-of-the-art equipment at the 630sqm gym.

A larger free weights area was created with more dumbbells, weights and benches and the Technogym Excite+ CV equipment was also installed.

The gym also benefitted from a complete redecoration of the workout area and more energy- efficient lighting while a fitness assessment area was been created with a Boditrax K780 Body Composition Analyser, said to give medical grade composition scan.
