Whipsnade Ashridge Phasel’s Wood


The activity centre just outside Hemel has so much to do you won’t know where to start! Activities available include high ropes, zip wire, human table football, climbing, abseiling tower, giant slide, pedal racers, archery, kayaking, orienteering and shelter building. There are lots of adventure days for children including Escape From Wildchild Wood, which includes wild den building, abseiling the Tower of Terror, zipwires and completing the adventure trail; Wild Survival Adventure Day where you’ll learn shelter building, firelighting and tracking. The beautiful 2,000 acres of mature woodland at Ashridge is a lovely place to take the kids during the spring. Wander the miles of marked footpaths, climb the 172 steps of the Bridgewater monument, or take part in organised activities. From 16 Feb–30 May follow the Ashridge Spring Trail, where children can follow their map and answer questions along the way, £1 per child. The annual Ashridge Cadbury Easter Egg Trail takes part from 10am until 4pm from 3-6 April and costs £3 each including a chocolate reward at the end, while Wild About Ashridge is a series of free holiday-time outdoor activities for children, from 4-17 April. You can pay for a day or splash out on membership which gives you unlimited access to the zoo and the brand new play area all year round. The zoo is huge, spread over 600 acres, so there’s plenty of space to run around. Animals to spot include giraffes, lions, tigers, penguins, hippos, elephants and meerkats as well as many many others and, once you’re tired of that there’s a new large, wooden fenced playground and an indoor soft play area. There are also gift shops and cafes, and picnic areas overlooking the countryside. Berkhamsted Castle


Your kids can learn more about the 11th century Norman castle at the visitor centre, or just enjoy being out in the fresh air. It’s a great space for kicking a football, having a stroll or enjoying a picnic among the ruins. n
