FEATURE ❘ STAR INTERVIEW

Q A

What will you miss?

The rat race. Being stuck in a warehouse all day. I’ve solo toured for months at a time and really enjoyed it. I like being alone but suspect I’ll be much less alone than I ever have been next year. Ironically, I may miss being alone. Relaxation is what I’ll probably miss the most but then again, I’m not so sure as from what I have read, Tommy Godwin found his long days on his bike relaxing and I can understand that.

Q A

How much will it mean to beat Tommy Godwin’s 1939 long considered unbreakable world record?

That’s the whole purpose, so I’m pretty obliged to say, “everything.”

It’s not that I think I’ll have beaten Tommy Godwin the man. 2015 is a very different generation and I’d say that it was technology that beat his record rather than me beating him. We do have much worse traffic nowadays, but I’ll be doing my best to avoid all that.

It could be that if I break Tommy’s record it may not be enough as there will be a very strong American rider called Kurt Searvogel who may well ride further than I do. I think there will be a hare/tortoise,

Golliath/David, American/Brit battle next year, with me being the latter of all three. Whatever happens I’ll give it all I have because this is probably going to be the only chance I get and I expect to end up having over 100 people giving their time to help me and who knows how many giving their money to help fund me. It’s not just me who is doing this and it can’t be done without my team of helpers. If I don’t give it everything I’ll let myself down as well as everyone who has helped and contributed. I also hope that we raise more than enough money to fund the attempt and that we become a charity fundraiser and it’s looking like that will be the case for me. Cycling World would like to wish Steven the best of luck and we will be providing regular updates in the magazine on his progress.

INFORMATION:

Steve needs volunteers to help with routes, accommodation and maintenance. Steve also needs finance. This will be an expensive undertaking just in terms of equipment. He also has to finance all his food and living expenses during a year away from work. You can keep up-to-date with Steven’s progress on the following website:- www.oneyeartimetrial.org.uk
