Have you had to change your diet and what are you expecting to eat throughout the challenge?

I haven’t changed my diet. I do expect to start craving for different foods during the year as I have done when Audax points chasing. For example, I don’t usualy eat Liquorice Allsorts, but for about two months in my Audax points chasing year of 2007 I was eating a kilo of them a week. Then I stopped wanting them and haven’t eaten them since.

What route are you following?

There will be several arterial routes to take me around the country and extra legs and loops will be added on. The roads to be used are marked in a road atlas and

my route planner will use that as a guide to plan my routes. They’ll also need to plan routes to wherever I may be staying the night when I’m not staying at home. These routes will be put onto my GPS for me to follow. They’ll be shorter than I expect to be able to ride in case something goes wrong, so I’ll be adding my own bits to them in situ most of the time.

I’m planning on doing a lot of riding between Essex and the flatlands of Yorkshire, though may also venture into parts of Wales, the West Country and will also be planning to ride the 2015 Paris Brest Paris. I also plan on riding some long distance time trials and other events that would be suitable.

Q

As an Audax rider, riding 205 miles is not uncommon but to sustain that for 365 days, Is it really achievable?

As an average daily mileage, Tommy Godwin has already proven that it is. I’ll need to do a bit more than that if I’m going to break the record. Just like Tommy Godwin did, I don’t expect to be able to ride at the average daily mileage from day 1. OK, just as Tommy Godwin did, I think I’ll do more on Day 1 because I probably won’t be able to sleep, so might as well get going at midnight. But I expect my mileage to drop down to around 170-180 miles a day for January, then increase as the weather and my fitness improves. Just as in my Audax points chasing year, I doubt I’ll get half of my total until about 7 months are up and get the other half in the last 5. I’ll be using easy roads which minimise stops and slowing down as much as possible, as well as avoiding hills. Unlike most Audax events.
