During this Rotary year, we celebrated the arrival of a Faringdon Rotakids club. The first RotaKids club that is not school based in our district, and I believe in the UK.

We are rightly very proud of them, as already they have raised £350! They decided they wanted to purchase 5 water barrels in the ‘Roll out the Barrel’ project, and 10 Life Straws. A remarkable achievement.

Another new arrival is planned. A junior Interactors club is being formed to bridge the age gap between RotaKids and our very succesful 6th form Interactors. This new club is planned to start emmediately after the Easter break.

The Youth Services Committee are hopeful that by the end of this Rotary year, we will have around 100 young people in our clubs every week.

Serious cognisance has to be given to the fact that social media is now very much part of the world where we live. There are currently 1.35 billion people using Facebook with 835 million daily users with 24 million of those coming from the UK.

This equates to about 55% of the population accessing their Facebook pages for an average of 21 minutes a day, so please let’s stop pretending that social media isn’t important in today’s society. Ultimately the ‘powers that be’ will ignore the growth of online interactions at their peril.
