Local Girl Lucy Reaches Final 16 year old Thamesmead student Lucy Watkins has reached the final of Open Mic UK which will be held on January 24th at the NEC Birmingham. This is her second year in the competition but she has never made it this far. To put it into context 9000 apply. Initial rounds are Regionals where numbers are whittled down to only 28 per age group, followed by Area finals of only 8 before the select few go through to the finals in front of industry judges and an audi- ence of a couple of thousand. To get to the final itself is already an immense achievement. Open Mic has been the launch pad for many household names such as some of the X Factor contestants; Birdy, Lucy Spraggan, Jaymi Hensley from Union J, to name a few. These performers are all now signed to music labels. The competition is divided into five age categories. Lucy, performing under stage name Aylis Mae, is competing in the under 16’s group as she was only 15 when she auditioned. To add to the pressure she will be performing her own song at the final. It is a ballad called ‘Invisible’. When I asked Lucy if she got nervous performing in front of crowds the answer was “I do get nervous, but it is a different kind of nerves doing auditions to performing in front of crowds”. She was scouted for Britain’s Got Talent and made it through to the second stages. She will find out in February if she is through to the live shows. 2015 looks set to be a good year for Lucy.
