ART SOURCE ARTIST IN FOCUS Yasmin Brooks

My dream is to give up the day job, spend all my time designing and to see my card designs in shops across the country!

I gain my inspiration from paper illustrators and designers such as Owen Gildersleeve and Helen Musselwhite, as well as the traditional and original surface pattern designers such as William Morris. I love the flow of his patterns, the deep colours and his stylised plants and birds. I love children’s illustration, the innocence of childhood and seeing the world through new eyes. I work in a number of different styles. My speciality is making paper-cut collages. I’m also a keen illustrator, and love the purity of line drawings. With my paper-cuts, I paint or draw, cut and style the designs and scan - nothing is ever glued

PG helps to paint a pretty picture of freelance artists, designers, verse writers and photographers’ worlds in order to promotetheir talents to publishers and, conversely, make it easier for publishers seeking artists.

down, the elements are always moving, and the designs are always changing!

Since graduating with a Second Class Honours Degree in Graphic Design from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2012, I’ve worked on a number of different design projects. I was especially excited that Hallmark chose a giftwrap design of mine, which will be out soon in 2015. I also created a successful pack of Christmas cards which were sold on the Magpie Miller website - these sold out within a week!

I’m really delighted to have been chosen to create the GCA Christmas card for 2014, a specially commissioned paper-cut design, which was great fun to make. All the lettering, elements of the owls, leaves and stars are all individual paper-cuts layered up to create the design. We went through lots of stages and

options to get to the final design!

What do I want to achieve? I would like a publisher to print my designs just so they can make people smile and for people to want to share them with the people they love. Email: yasmin.brooks89@gmail.com
