congratulations to 2014 TALHFA achievement award winners

The TALHFA 2014 Awards were presented in October at the 22nd Annual Educational Conference in Corpus Christi. Jeff Wall, Heart of Texas HFC, presented the awards recognizing innovative examples of best practices. The annual TALHFA award nominations continue to be inspirational and illustrate the level of commitment TALHFA members possess.

This year, three nominations were selected to win the Outstanding Development Award.

Justin Hartz, LDG Development, together with Ron Kowal, AAHC, accepted an award for The Pointe at Ben White & The Villages at Ben White.

The Pointe at Ben White and The Villages at Ben White will be a 433-unit neighbor- hood with garden style apartment homes for working families and those 55 and older earning 60 percent of Austin’s area median income. Multi-generational housing is a concept gaining traction in the affordable housing field for its potential to strengthen communities by universally designing an area linking the needs of children and the aging population. Although The Pointe and The Villages are their own entities, they are adjacent to one another and within the same gated area.

Megan Lasch with Pinnacle Housing accepted the award for Amberwood Place.

Amberwood Place is a new construction, garden style, multi-family community lo- cated in Longview, Texas. Created with working families in mind, this development offers a number of spacious 1, 2, 3 and 4 bedroom units and encourages active community engagement with a multitude of outdoor amenities. What really makes this property stand out is that in addition to a kinetic sculpture commissioned by Texas sculptor Jim LaPaso for the property entrance, Amberwood Place partnered with Moving Lives of Kids Art Center to create a 150 foot long mural on the proper- ty. The mural includes artwork from six local and national artists who lead a group of 10 youth artists to assist in the project. The selection of artists and local youth was conducted through a six month community process that included theme development, artwork contests and youth participation competitions. The ability to include the entire Longview community in this project that promoted the importance of art education and the idea of working together for the greater good, truly makes this property outstanding.

On behalf of Sherman Roberts with City Wide CDC, Karen Schaffner, City of Dallas HFC, accepted the award for Lancaster Urban Village.
