Easter, Valentines Day & Mothers Day

Make the most of special occasions and customers will come back for more

Widdop in Earlier Days

‘from photoframes to figurines and clocks to crystal’

Special occasions

Christmas, Mothers Day and Valentines Day are crucial dates in the gift retail calendar but are you making the most of Easter, Halloween, Communion and Confirmation, Graduation and end of term, to name just a few? The potential opportunities for gift giving

have increased dramatically in recent years and one supplier ready to embrace them all is the long established, Widdop Bingham, run by the same family since 1883. When I visited the impressive premises

in Chadderton, North Manchester it was pouring with rain as we drove across the Pennines but a sunny welcome was waiting at this award-winning firm. There are currently more than 7,000 items in the

Widdop catalogue – everything ‘from photoframes to figurines and clocks to crystal’. Recent modernisation of the warehouse guarantees quick delivery within two days and a brand new website will be launched early in 2015. Although a Widdop stand can usually be found at

all the major trade shows it also has four showrooms at its premises open to buyers all year round. This December 1-5 the company is holding its first ever Seasonal Show to showcase new lines covering the major gifting occasions for 2015. It will also open on Sunday December 7 for those unable to attend during the week.

A highlight of the show

will be its Christmas 2015 collection which follows the Christmas 2014 launch but is three times bigger. Two brand new occasions ranges include novelty Easter and Halloween gifts. Visiting the

showroom is a great way to fully understand the

extent of the range on offer and discover fresh sales opportunities.

Four in-house designers – soon

to be joined by a fifth - are constantly updating seasonal and sentimental ranges covering everything from wedding and baby to age related products, sentimental relative products, hobbies, graduation and retirement. The company has a workforce of 130 people

including 12 sales staff who travel the country advising retailers on new product and potential best sellers. But at the heart of the business is the Illingworth family – brothers Stuart, Andrew and Chris. Their father Bob is still a regular visitor to the offices. Following in the family footsteps are Stuart’s

sons, Stephen and Dan (below) who have just as much enthusiasm for the business and the gift industry. Dan (26) has relished masterminding the new website and iPad ordering system and said: “This is all I ever wanted to do. As children we came to the office with Dad on the way to school and as we grew older, we were given small jobs to do.” Dan studied Business and Marketing at

University before working at Yellow Pages for four years to gain experience outside the family firm. He finally joined Widdop this year and couldn’t be happier as part of the fifth generation to continue the family tradition.
