P&O Ferries is to upgrade its service between Teesport and Zeebrugge from three days a week to daily. From the New Year, the 1,625 lane metres Mistral will take up service from alongside the Bore Song. At the same time, P&O will increase capacity on its Teesport -

Europoort route by replacing the 1,760lm Wilhelmine with the 2,270lm Estraden. With 2015’s new low sulphur emissions rules in mind, Estraden will

be fitted with two Norsepower wind rotors, the latter-day equivalent of sails, and NAPA Optimisation equipment. The latter is a package that factors in data for passage planning, such as wind and tide, and offers course and engine settings for best fuel efficiency. Mistral features an efficient single engine, fitted with variable frequency drive. The Bore Song will have a sulphur scrubber. PD Ports’ has already announced a £ million investment in a new

intermodal rail terminal at Teesport, bringing the prospect of rail-sea- rail services to Scotland and the Midlands via the major continental rail hub of Zeebrugge and the North-east. P&O Ferries’ commercial director, Janette Bell, said: “The new rail

service complements our own market leading rail capability at our Zeebrugge hub. With our new daily service this exciting development allows us to provide customers with the opportunity to grow in a key geographical market in an environmentally-friendly way.” And PD Ports’ business development director, Geoff Lippitt, added:

“This new service is another significant development for Teesport and further positions it as a major gateway to northern England and Scotland. For importers and exporters to and from Europe it’s excellent news as this will provide the very important daily frequency to this major European hub.”
