SMOOTH OPERATOR Xing Education – launched in 2012 – aims to develop work skills in young people, through a programme which enables schools to set up a low-cost smoothie bar. Allison Williams, head teacher, Craigfelen Primary School, Wales: ‘We decided to go ahead with the smoothie bar as it was a fantastic opportunity for our children to develop their entrepreneurial talents. The children came up with a business name (Smoothie Magic), logo, slogan (hocus pocus giving you focus), and a business plan. They produced tasters to give out to prospective customers, and presented an assembly to tell the other pupils about the  their smoothie stall was a Monday and located themselves in the very busy hall. The children assessed each other’s strengths and weaknesses, then divided up the different roles within the business – smoothie makers, and pupils looking after the money, running the website and advertising. The advertising team created posters with QR code links to our smoothie blog, TV adverts to play on our school TV system, and marketing letters to parents. They worked with the web team, who were responsible for using the school Twitter account and blog to advertise the business and interact with customers. So  three sales and a busy sports day/school fête. Their plans for the future include passing their knowledge on to younger pupils – they are already inviting young entrepreneurs from our reception class to help on the stall during sales!’ Simon and Kyle, from the web team for Smoothie Magic:


‘We make fresh refreshing smoothies that are unbelievably  is called “Wizard’s Wonder” which contains strawberries  contains mangoes and pineapple. We are a proper business, with two managers (Simon and Naomi). Our operational plan is to sell smoothies every week and on special days.  different skills: mixing, pouring, estimating, adding, and more. After that, we had to invite classes along and pour the smoothies into each cup cleanly. Then we had to serve our customers. We had a team selling smoothies and a team 
