oard-certified dermatologist Dr. Ashley Magovern and her team at Manhattan Dermatology offer general, cosmetic and pediatric

dermatology services in a friendly, intimate environment. Dr. Ashley grew up in El Segundo and opened Manhattan Dermatology three years ago.

What would you like potential patients to know about you? “When I chose to go into dermatology, it wasn’t necessarily to perform cosmetic pro- cedures. I really just wanted to be an expert in the skin, and I still really enjoy medical dermatology. But as the field of non-surgical cosmetics has grown, I’ve found myself in the perfect position to do both.”

How do you advise your clients to achieve and maintain success? “We can do amazing things now—the best

approach is to combine treatment modalities to achieve the best outcome. I love combin- ing laser resurfacing, Ultherapy, Botox, fillers and skin care. It can seem overwhelming—but like exercise, start somewhere, make it part of your routine and realize that it takes time. I love helping patients come up with a plan.”

What’s most rewarding about your work? “Starting my own business has been an unexpected reward. Like most doctors, I had no experience with business and had to learn on the job. There was a lot of uncertainty at first, but now I am very proud to have built a state-of-the-art skin care center that provides outstanding customer service.”

What do you enjoy about your specialty? “I enjoy teaching patients about how to be safe in the sun. I recognize that most of my patients live at the beach and love the outdoors, and I embrace that. I don’t ask them

to avoid the sun—I just want them to be sun smart and come in annually for a skin cancer screening (or anytime they are worried about a specific spot). Remember, we can essentially cure an early-stage melanoma.”

FAST FACT

Before opening her private practice three years ago, Dr. Ashley worked for several years alongside world-renowned dermatol- ogist Howard Murad at the Murad Inclusive Health Medical Group.

Tell us about your family. “I met my husband in medical school—he is an orthopaedic surgeon. After school I dragged him back to Manhattan Beach—he loves it! We have two girls, Mary and Samantha. My parents live in El Segundo, and my brother is local as well. He works at RE/MAX in the same building as my practice—I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
