special programs/news BENEFACTORS CHOICE WILLIE COLE

The Weatherspoon is pleased to announce that Willie Cole’sWind Mask (1991) was acquired by the Benefactors group for the museum’s collection. Weatherspoon visitors will recall seeing this work in the exhibition, Complex Conversations: Willie Cole Sculptures and Wall Works, in Fall 2013.

Willie Cole,Wind Mask, 1991, assemblage with hairdryers, 20 1/2 x 19 x 10 in. Benefactors Choice Purchase, 2014.

Inspired by East Asian ceremonial masks used to achieve spiritual transformation, the sculpture touches on contemporary identity issues at the same time as it takes on a god-like semblance symbolizing the elements of fire and air. This work forms valuable connections to many objects in the Weatherspoon’s collection, including major sculptures by Nick Cave and Alison Saar, and expands the museum’s holdings of innovative work by important American artists.
