In the Service of Sound 2014 International Sound Therapy Conference

The idea for this conference began formulating four years ago, but did not start a serious evaluation until a year later. At that time, a small group of sound therapy enthusiasts, who longed to see a serious examination of sound therapy, contacted me. After much discussion, I began to turn the wheel, to ascertain if something like this could bear fruit. In 1990, I began a run with the Sacred Sounds Retreat, which brought together teachers from many traditions, to share their wisdom on sound. Those retreats featured many, if not all the instruments you see being used in sound therapy today, and some that are so esoteric, students were unaware of them. After 15 consecutive years I decided to put the annual gathering to rest. This idea was copied by many others, and even to today, many sound gatherings are presented around the country.

But many of these presentations lack academic substance, and only scratch the surface, failing to provide the necessary instructions that are critically needed to empower the student with an elevated skill set. Because I have been directing a private sound therapy and philosophical academy for over 3 decades, with an emphasis on academic education, I was approached to resurrect my annual retreats again. But after careful evaluation, I decided if I was to begin this again, I was not going to just pick up where I left off, but raise the bar substantially, and work on an event that would provide authentic information by scholars and teachers who have devoted their lifetimes to the sound therapy arts. So with that in mind, and in conjunction with the Harmonic Therapy Association and private benefactors, I decided to accept the invitation, and began the planning for this year’s sound therapy conference.

The first person I contacted was Jeff Volk, who many years ago hosted the ‘Sound Colloquium’, and has devoted his lifetime in preserving the work of Hans Jenny; important work that everyone in the sound therapy arts references. And then I began the process of contacting many others who have devoted their lives to the world of sound, such as Dr. John Beaulieu, who put me in touch with Silvia
