Lombard Historical Commission seeking nominations for William J. Mueller Lombard Heritage Award

The Lombard Historical Commission is seeking nomina- tions for its annual Heritage Award. In 2013, the award was renamed in honor of former Village President William Mueller. The award recognizes individuals, organizations, projects, and programs that demonstrate a commitment to excellence in historic preservation. In doing so, the Historical Commis- sion hopes to inspire others to preserve, protect and promote Lombard’s historic heritage. There are six award categories: 1. ADAPTIVE USE/REHABILITATION: Conversion of a his- toric structure for a new or compatible use while retaining its architectural integrity. 2. ADVOCACY/EDUCATION: An effective campaign to save a historic resource or an innovative program, publication, or me- dia initiative that communicates the value of historic preserva- tion to the general public. 3. LEADERSHIP/STEWARDSHIP: Individual, private orga- nization, or joint partnership that has championed historic preservation, planning or public policy in the community. This category also includes the thoughtful maintenance and/or continued use of a historic resource by its owner(s). 4. LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT Professional or volunteer individual who has contributed to the preservation movement over the length of his or her career. 5. NEW CONSTRUCTION Sensitive new design project built

within the existing scale of a historic area. Contemporary designs accepted and encouraged. 6. RESTORATION Removing incompatible alterations and reconstructing missing elements to refl ect a building’s historic appearance in a given era.

Projects must have been completed within the geographi- cal boundaries of Lombard within the last fi ve years. Projects will be judged according to their impact on the community, quality and degree of diffi culty, and the degree to which they serve as an example of excellence in historic preservation and infl uence others.

Nominations should be mailed or hand-delivered to the Lombard Historical Commis- sion, c/o Village Hall, 255 E. Wilson Avenue, Lombard, IL 60148 no later than July 31. Depending on the category of the nomination, photographs, building plans or biographical information may be required.
