THE EYES HAVE IT FANTASTIC FOUR

Our pick of the most exciting, intriguing or important local business stories right now

BRITISH eyewear brand Cutler and Gross is to open a third UK store in Bath this summer, at 9 Bridge Street.

The Bath premises will be the eighth Cutler and Gross store worldwide, and the first UK store to pop up outside of London. As a premium shopping location, Bath has been selected to accompany the brand’s existing locations as the city complements the principles of strong heritage and timeless design that Cutler and Gross have carefully refined since being founded in 1969 by Graham Cutler and Tony Gross.

Cutler and Gross frames are handcrafted in the brand’s own

family-run factory in Northern Italy. Each frame takes four weeks to handcraft and goes through 42 rigorous processes, combining traditional production techniques and bespoke materials. The new store will carry over 6,000 of the frames and will offer full optometric and prescription services as well as the latest technologies in optics. For more www.cutlerandgross.com

BUILDING SOCIETY SUCCESS 2

BATH BUILDING SOCIETY’S annual results have shown record levels, with assets having risen by 0.95 per cent to £272.5m, from £270m in the previous year. They also showed an 11.5 per cent increase in its reserves from £18.8m to £21m year on year, and pre-tax profits increased by 22.9 per cent to £2.8m in 2013.

Despite challenging market conditions, the society has weathered the aftershocks of the recent financial crisis and continued to see the benefit of its specialist positioning in the mortgage and savings market, which has allowed it to build its reserves through increased levels of profitability without increasing its risk profile. “Our mortgage book grew by 8.7 per cent in 2013 to a record level of £210m, with gross mortgage lending up by 25.1 per cent to £38.6m,” said chief executive Dick
