Foster Care and the Dangers of Online Technology There is a good chance that your foster child has

never been taught the value of personal respect and self- worth. As a result, your foster child will not find sexting a negative action. It is important that you teach your foster child to not only value himself as a person, but to value others, as well.

When you have the talk about “the birds and the

bees” with your foster child, also inform them of the many dangers associated with sexting, as well as the consequences. Introduce this topic of conversation when the child is 10 years or older, or dependent upon the child’s maturity level. Warn your foster child of all the dangers and consequences he might face from sending or receiving sext messages including the legal implications. Check your foster child’s online devices on a regular basis, looking for sext based messages. Remember, you are not invading the child’s privacy; instead, you are helping to keep the child and the child’s privacy safe.
