Being Prepared for Emergency Situations - Part 1

Emergency and disaster situations may be caused by natural, technological, or intentional events. Training, preparation and practice are essential. In this Part I session, participants will discuss appropriate responses to situations which may require evacuation or shelter. Presentation includes sample procedures, warning system, communication, facility criteria for shelter and evacuation, and ways to evacuate young children and children with special needs.


Participants will…


• Be able to list types of emergency situations that could affect their program.


• Be able to describe evacuation procedures. • Be able to identify areas of safe shelter in facilities.

Beyond Graphs: Facilitating Evaluative Thinking in Statewide Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)

The California Department of Public Health, California Home Visiting Program (CHVP) implemented a CQI process that addresses locally- identified topics. Capacity-building issues, partner- ships, systems integration and data outcomes are included. CQI topics from the federally- funded Maternal, Infant & Early Childhood Home Visiting Program sites illustrate the evaluation method, including team-based implementation, qualitative and quantitative data collection tools, results and feedback pathways. Participants will…


• Learn the five components of a traditionally- defined CQI process, and critique each component for application in a public health/ social services setting.


• Identify qualitative and quantitative topics for a CQI process by completing Learning Activity 2.


• Apply a systems integration, partnership de- velopment, or workforce development topic to a CQI process by completing a sample Priority Area Worksheet (Learning Activity 3).
