V2X communications

on-board display may be built for informing the driver about the current conditions.

EXPECTED RESULTS Since the project has only recently started and the develop- ment phase will continue for a further two more years, the ultimate results are not yet predictable. However, the stud- ies undertaken in other countries for standardization of this technology encourage investments for further researches in this field. The main concern of the public authorities on the implementation of new technologies in Istanbul is the soci- etal acceptability issues. Therefore, the success of the results is crucial.

STEPS TO SUCCESS For the successful implementation of the project, it is essential to have a collaborative partner from the automotive industry for testing and implementing prototype before deployment. Apart from this, the existing vehicles need to be adapted to use the proposed system by integrating designed and developed on-board unit with all other required equipment including transmitter-receiver, GPS antenna, CAN-BUS integration etc. With the implementation of this infrastructure, enhanced

traffic security and road safety is expected to be achieved. Moreover, the system is likely to increase adherence to the rules by influencing driver behaviour that will in turn direct the traffic in a positive manner. However, the factors influenc- ing the proper functioning of the system need to be carefully tackled for maximum realization of results. The deployment of the project in the industry would open

up opportunities for the provision of sustainable transporta- tion while boosting traffic safety and efficiency while at the same time reducing the amount of fatal car accidents that cost thousands of people their lives every year.
