be carried out that will involve estab- lishment of vehicular communication infrastructure using IEEE 802.11p stand- ardized wireless access protocol, and the evaluation of integration and deploy- ment of this into real world.

RESEARCH, DEVELOP, IMPLEMENT A large number of R&D projects were conducted, offering a vast number of solutions to the world of V2X commu- nication systems. In recent years there has been a great emphasis on the grow- ing trend towards the integration and deployment of these technologies into the practical world. Hence, in Germany operational field tests assessing the com- petency and the aids of applications involving vehicular communications are already being undertaken.3

Due to the extreme necessity of maintaining the

traffic to be as accident-free as possible, especially in a highly populated city like Istanbul, a dedicate research project has been initiated with professionals from various backgrounds including ISBAK INC, one of the affiliated companies of IMM and acting as the executing arm of IMM in transportation related projects. At the present, there are 1900 signal-

ized intersections that are controlled, more than 500 microwave sensors for measuring the flow speed, around 500 traffic observation cameras and 230 electronic violation detection systems (EDS) of 12 different types to provide safe travel for citizens. Furthermore, adaptive real-time traffic management system is also deployed that reduces the travel time through the congested streets of the city by dynamically adaptable sig- nal durations. By the implementation of “green wave” through the major arterials
