Yvonne’s story….

Lindsay saw me at an event last year and subsequently contacted me with regards to a room makeover. She needed a new nursery and I was delighted - nurseries are so special and I love designing them. They’re where a baby is welcomed into the world and where they start forming memories, so they need to be just right. I met Lindsay, Andy and son, Tom, in their home and we chatted through some ideas of colours and styles, anything I should avoid and practical points such as budget and timings. They were looking for a gender neutral design, nothing too dark. They also wanted Tom to be involved too, as he was keen to help decorate his little brother or sister’s room. During the briefi ng I measured up the room and we discussed requirements, such as what additional furniture was required, and possible colour schemes. The only colour that didn’t hit the mark was green (as a result of school uniform memories!) so I left that evening full of ideas of themes and potential art projects. I returned a couple of weeks later armed with my designs. Finding gender neutral options isn’t as easy as it might seem. Retailers increasingly seem determined to paint the world pink or blue so it can be challenging fi nding alternatives. I fi nd I’m turning more regularly to online stores as their variety, uniqueness and cost simply can’t be found on the high street.

I shared four options with Lindsay, Andy and

Tom. The individual themes carried a colour pal- ette and included specifi c fun and easy art proj- ects that refl ected each of the concepts. I also worked with existing furniture to help make the project as affordable as possible including Tom’s old cot and changing table.

After chatting over the merits of each, ‘Animal

Circus’ came through as the favoured design. I was thrilled and left Lindsay and Andy with contact details for tradesmen and a revised shopping list for furniture and decorative items to enable them to decorate the room at their own pace.

As with all my projects, the most reward- ing aspect is seeing the end result and the joy on my client’s faces. With this job in particular however, it was seeing Tom’s reaction and how proud he was that he’d added his own mark! n
