Stagecraft's new factory: opening ceremony

On Thursday 20 March, Garden Centre Retail sent Features Editor Alex Farnham up to Newtown, Powys, to attend the offi cial opening of Stagecraft’s new factory on the Vastre Enterprise Park, a year after a fi re that led to the unfortunate closure of their old facility in Llaithddu

Along with Chairman and founder Tom Davis, staff and delegates from across the UK watched as The Rt. Hon. Carwyn Jones, First Minister of Wales, offi cially opened the new Stagecraft premises, handing over a wooden plaque to commemorate the occasion. Tom said “whilst it has been a turbulent year, the opening ceremony by the fi rst minister signalled an exciting new era of growth for Stagecraft.” The fi re, which happened exactly a year

before the opening of the new premises on March 20 2013, caused the loss of all equipment and ongoing projects that Stagecraft’s 25 or so staff were working on. An unfortunate event which is a major setback for any company, yet Stagecraft are extremely proud to have turned things around so quickly, especially with how understanding their customers were, and how much their suppliers chipped in and assisted.

Tom added “I’d like to thank not only our

customers and suppliers, but the staff as well, for all the help and support in helping get the company back on its feet and helping out at such a critical stage.” Although Stagecraft had to invest heavily

in new machinery to get things up and running again, they were fortunate enough to be able to save some of their timber stock, as well as all their data, which fortunately was all backed up at a different site. At the opening, delegates were able to

see the staff in action at the new factory, as well as a look at the book of Stagecraft’s builds on display; it is clear that the company recovered extremely well in such a short space of time. Signing some of their biggest clients this year, it seems that despite the knockback of the fi re, Tom and all the other staff at Stagecraft have put in a lot of work to get the company back on its feet. Within a couple of days of the fi re, Tom had already found a small, temporary facility in Newtown for the manufacturing side of things, whilst the offi ce staff took refuge in the dining room of the farm on which the old facility was, running the operation from there. After a couple of weeks operations moved to an adjoining premises to the new factory, which, although half the size, allowed the company to carry on with the rebuilding process before eventually moving to their permanent new location, allowing them to grow and thrive only a year after the fi re. Stagecraft specialises in the design,

manufacture and installation of timber based fi ttings and displays, with a big hand in the garden retail industry supplying a range of garden centres across the UK. www.stagecraft-uk.com
