Lots of things have been going on in the village since the last issue hit the streets. Sheepwash Parish Council Election

On Thursday 10th January 2013 an election took place to fill the post of Councillor on the Sheepwash Parish Council created by the resignation of the Chair, Jill Thomas. Tony Jones was voted in as the new Chair of the Council, leaving his post vacant.

One other Parish Councillor and I were present with the three candidates at the count. In view of the interest and participation of so many people within the Parish I thought it might be helpful to let you have more detail of the results.

These were as follows:-

28 postal votes were issued, of which 17 were returned and counted. Out of a total electorate of 217, a total of 124 votes were cast in all.

This translated into a 58% turnout, described by the returning officer as “unprecedented” for an election at Parish Council level. This is even more remarkable when taking into account the fact that no polling cards were issued and sent to all those qualified to vote. It is likely that the turnout would have been even higher had this method of notifying the Parish been implemented.

The total votes received for each candidate were: Joanna Driver - 26 Philip Hackett - 57 Nigel Hutchings - 41

As a result, Philip Hackett was duly elected.

Finally, as a member of the Parish Council, can I personally invite you to attend the Parish Council meetings as many times as you wish in the future. There will be an opportunity for you to comment on any issues raised at the meeting, or to bring to the Parish Council any concerns or ideas you may have to help keep this Parish together as a cohesive and very friendly community.

Melvyn Elliott, Councillor, Sheepwash Parish Council

Our Latest Arrival Matthew, Rachel and Thomas would like to introduce Lucy Rose Newitt to the village.

She was born on December 19th 2012, and Rachel and Lucy are doing well at home.

We'd like to say a big thank you to everyone for their kind wishes, presents and cards.

We're looking forward to having some warmer weather so that we can take her out to meet people!
