Benefits of water level radars are out in the open


The widespread winter floods have once again highlighted the issues of flood warning, urban and rural drainage capacity, ‘pinch and blockage points’ for flood debris. This has put the accurate and reliable monitoring of open water levels under the spotlight.


Whether for early warning


flood alarms, the monitoring of drainage, dissipation or capacity for water management: it's the actual level measurement at the front end that is the crucial ‘eyes and ears’ for any remote telemetry/monitoring system. A newly published case study from VEGA describes how radar level technology offers a very flexible, low cost, low maintenance solution, which is easy to deploy, with very good accuracy and reliability, that can assist in this important area. The case study features VEGA


radar level sensors being installed throughout a council drainage area in the North East Midlands. This council has undertaken a wide scale program of changing out the existing ultrasonic and pressure sensors, as well as installing systems at brand new measurement points that were previously inaccessible due to infrastructure requirements. This has been enabled via the VEGA non-contact ‘water radar’ level sensor which has a 2mm accuracy over its 15m range. This replacement system was chosen as it is unaffected by temperature, wind, rain or surface turbulence. The need for the civil engineering work on sensor measurement protection structures, like stilling tubes, wells and conduits required for other technologies is removed, thus saving both time and complexity. The low cost radar sensors use little enough power to measure every 15 minutes and operate between 2-3 years on the battery pack integrated into the Frog unit, even with a measuring range of up to 15m. Both sensor and logger are flood proof, the radar has ‘overfill’ detection and IP68 protected to 2 bar (20m). There is a detailed case study


available, which features two quite opposite applications on ‘open water’ level measurement. One is over a short 2m range in an urban drainage environment, which had reliability and maintenance issues with other sensor types; the other over a long measuring range of 12m on a large tidal influenced river in a rural setting, at a site that would have been extremely difficult and costly to install and attain reliable readings with conventional technologies. The article shows not only the applications, but explains in detail about the fabrication and has pictures of the mounting of radar and data logger in one simple housing.
