ike so many who today enjoy several aspects of shooting sports with

cartridge arms, both target, hunting and clay shooting, my introduction to the sport was with airguns and I own several air pistols and rifl es to this day. T e modest power level and

price was always signifi cant in this process and remains a major factor today. With very smart and

effi cient break-barrel models still available at remarkably aff ordable prices, air pistols

and rifl es continue to off er that simple, safe route to the introduction of new shooters into the sport and play an important role in the ongoing growth and therefore continued success of all types of shooting sport. Some of my earliest fond

memories of time spent with my father were with him giving me my fi rst air rifl e and showing me how to use it. T at is something beyond price and gun shops and clubs around the world have the opportunity to be part of

that process when they help a dad select an airgun for a son or daughter.

Cost-effective Our survey shows that the simple spring-and-piston break-barrel design remains the best-selling type and with good reason. Sturdy and not too heavy, all one needs is a tin of pellets for hours of quiet fun. No CO2 to buy or diver’s air bottles to be bought and fi lled; this is independent fun shooting at its low-cost best. Rifl es

remain much more popular than air pistols, although signifi cant numbers are sold. T ere are some very advanced

break-barrel guns too, with famous names like Weihrauch, BSA, Crosman, Air Arms, Diana and others also producing more sophisticated models with high specifi cation and better triggers for serious pest-control/ hunting use. Some are also available in higher power levels too, with certain ones being halfway or more toward .22LR rimfi re
