Chairman’s Message from the Board

In this age of computers, smart phones and broadband, communication between people has never been easier. News travels so much faster than it has ever done. Mobile phones allow us to communicate from anywhere at any time.

The members of our generation are those who are most likely to miss out on the opportunities to use this modern technology. This problem all too often affects the 50+ network. The number of our members that give us an email address is about a third of our membership. Most offer a telephone number and all give an address. Cost to the Network for postage means that the quarterly News Magazine is the only opportunity we have to contact some of our members.

The age of the computer has also created problems, not least of which is that of privacy. The leaking and stealing of private information seems almost endemic. The 50+ Network board very jealously guards the information about our members. Any data held that could compromise the privacy of any memberis only available to members

of the board, who need to contact members directly.

I would like to encourage you to let us know if you move home, change telephone number or acquire or change an email address. If you are not sure whether we have your email address or not, see Tony’s article on Emails on page 35.

Have you heard about the Silver Line? It is a help line for older people in the UK. You can call this number 0800 470 8090 free of charge, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. (Remember if using a mobile phone you may have to pay). It is confidential and offers friendship, information and advice; also protection from abuse and neglect. I would urge anyone in need of help to contact the Silver Line.

In our last publication we asked for voluntary contributions towards our postage and running costs. We would like to say a BIG thank you to those of you who have kindly sent in donations to support the Network. If you are able and would like to make a contribution, we would love to hear from you. Please send cheques to our usual postal address, made payable to Northants 50+ Network.

Finally, in order to meet our objectives, the network urgently needs volunteers. If you are interested call Sandra Frampton 01604 718098 or email the network at Ray Hutchins - Chairman
