Pension review

By Jane Stevens Dip PFS Independent Financial Adviser

If you have ever paid into a workplace or private pension now is a good time to have them reviewed. You may have had numerous employers, and with each employer it is possible to have acquired pension benefits.

Te charges on modern pension products can be much lower than older products. When Stakeholder was introduced it brought with it a ‘charge cap’; a maximum that pension providers could charge. As a result the charges on modern pension plans were reduced.

A pension review will provide the information you need to determine if your pensions carry expensive charges.

Consolidating Pensions A large pension is worth more to a pension provider than many small

pensions. It could be that by consolidating some or all of your pensions you could not only obtain the modern lower charges, but qualify for a discount on your pension charges because your pension fund is attractive to pension providers.

Lower pension charges means more is leſt for you at retirement. Having your pensions together under your control, means you can see how they are doing and better forecast your future pension benefits.

Here are some questions you should ask yourself: • What are my pensions worth? • What will that provide as an income in retirement? • Where is it? Where is it invested? Is anyone taking care of it? What charges are they taking? • Do I know if my pensions hold any valuable guarantees? When must I access them? Or what must I do to ensure I capture the full benefit of them?

If you don’t know the answer to any of these questions its time for a pension review.
