Police raid Curry Mile

A number of these restaurants are reported to have had their meters removed or main supplies disconnected. The latest crackdown is part of an ongoing operation between Greater Manchester Police and energy company Electricity North West. According to Rusholme councillor Rabnawaz Akbar, “Tampering with electricity supplies is irresponsible and clearly a health and safety risk.” By bypassing the mains meters, people are put at risk of electrocution and explosion. There are also associated fire risks.”

The police and partner agencies are reviewing evidence of licence breaches and criminal offences, and will be taking appropriate action. Further visits will be conducted to ensure the safety of employees, customers and residents, and offenders may also face closure orders, financial penalties and criminal prosecution. n
