SALMONELLA HITS FOOD INSPECTORS’ PARTY


A BUG which caused a group of Leicester City Council health inspectors to fall ill following a night out at the Kayal restaurant has been identified as salmonella. In total some 19 people were taken ill after eating there, including ten food inspectors. The Leicester restaurant,


which has enjoyed 5 star ratings in the past for hygiene from the council, closed down temporarily after the event. The cause of the salmonella was tracked to a chutney which was freshly made each day on the premises. The restaurants has decided not to serve this particular chutney any more. Kayal owner Jaimon


Thomas says he has also refitted the kitchen and employed an independent hygiene consultant, Machin and Toplass, which has reviewed the restaurant’s policies and procedures. A spokeswoman for Leicester City Council said: “The council’s food safety team took a total of 49 food and environmental samples from Kayal. Of those, 48 of these came back negative, but one yielded salmonella. It was isolated in a chutney, prepared at Kayal using fresh ingredients.” n


Only a curry will do for Ozzy!


FORMER rocker and reality TV star, Ozzy Osbourne, demanded to be served a curry even though he was in an Italian restaurant! He was with wife Sharon, and other friends, at the C branch of the Cipriani restaurant chain in London. Not impressed with the menu he repeatedly asked for a curry, which in the end the restaurant obliged. According to a report in the Daily Mirror, waters were


dispatched to a nearby Mayfair Indian restaurant and ordered a takeaway which was served to him in the posh Italian restaurant. He was said to be ‘delighted’. n
