Managed Cleaning Program Facilitates Cost Reductions for Health Care Facilities

Spartan HealthCheck® trains, validates, and documents environmental service staff leading to a reduction in healthcare-associated infections

Spartan Chemical Company, a recog- nized leader in the formulation and manu- facture of sustainable cleaning and sani- tation solutions for the institutional and industrial market, today announced the release of Spartan HealthCheck. Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) are a costly and unwanted problem for health care facilities today. According to the CDC, approximately 1 out of every 20 hospitalized patients will contract an HAI. HAIs are also a public health issue; adding approximately $30 billion to U.S. health costs each year. As a result, the preven- tion and reduction HAIs is a top priority for not only health care providers, but for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as well. It is scientifically proven that rigorous

and regular environmental cleaning, as part of an environmental infection con- trol program, is associated with major decreases in HAIs. Training of environ- mental services staff on how to clean more thoroughly is paramount to the success of the program. “Studies show that training is the num- ber one issue in helping to prevent HAIs. Those studies also show that training in health care facilities starts to diminish af- ter 90 days, and people go back to their old habits,” Greg Ford, VP of Sales for Spar- tan Chemical explains. “To address this issue, we have taken our highly successful CleanCheck® program and added a health care module that addresses the short and long-term training needs of health care facilities while providing exam-supported training certification.” Training tools and documentation

for environmental infection control in health care facilities Spartan has designed an environmental cleaning program that addresses the chal- lenges that ES (environmental services) managers face when developing a sys- tem to optimize the thoroughness of high touch surface cleaning as part of terminal room cleaning at the time of discharge or transfer of patients. Spartan’s Health- Check combines education, training tools, and documentation with Spartan disinfec- tant and cleaning solutions to provide a complete environmental infection control program for health care and other facili- ties where healthcare-acquired pathogens (HAP) or HAIs are a concern. Spartan’s HealthCheck uses a three- pronged approach to ensure proper environmental cleaning is achieved – TRAINING, VALIDATION, and DOCU- MENTATION. CleanCheck, a web-based, multi-lingual training system educates staff on cleaning standards and methods. Handy, portable CleanCheck procedure cards reinforce the training program and provide a framework for adherence to the standard going forward.

This process is

supported by Spartan’s UVcheck® vali- dation tools. Hermetically-sealed UV

marker swabs and a portable black light allow ES managers to train and assess staff cleaning operations while minimizing risk of room-to-room transfer of HAPs. The data from this training process can then be loaded back as part of the personalized performance tracking in Spartan’s Compu- Clean® CMMS (Custodial Maintenance Management Software) which allows ES managers to document activity in order to track and verify program progress and identify areas of concern. In combination with Spartan’s wide range of cleaning and disinfecting chemicals, the system pro- vides an end-to-end solution for environ- mental cleaning for health. Cleaning for health is not only a concern for health care facilities. In K-12 educa- tion facilities, school budgets are heavily dependent on attendance for funding. A clean, healthy environment leads to better attendance.

“While the benefits of cleaning for health are widely studied and documented in the health care industry, we have found that most other markets we serve find this program highly valuable,” says Ford, “es- pecially industries heavily regulated by legislation.”

In food processing facilities, documen- tation and reporting of facility cleaning standards and performance is required. The HealthCheck program allows these facilities to verify and validate their clean- ing standards and control and manage these standards with tools and technology. In addition, building service contractors are finding that a managed environmen- tal cleaning program with quantitative, documented performance and processes enables them to create value with their customers. Spartan HealthCheck is available now through Spartan’s wide network of distri- bution partners. The program components can be easily customized to meet the needs of health care, education, food processing, and building service contractors where cleaning for health is a priority. About CleanCheck Spartan’s CleanCheck is a comprehen-

sive education and training program that ensures thorough deployment of cleaning standards and practices. The multi-lingual program employs a system of video tuto- rials, training manuals, procedure cards, testing, and certification. Customers can tailor the system to their specific needs via a web-based management tool.
