Fire Department ambulances receive new Stryker stretchers, loading systems
In the next few weeks, all fi ve ambulances used by the Lombard Fire Department will have received new Stryker™ Power Assisted Stretcher and Loading Systems – equipment Fire Department leaders said will help not only prevent injuries to paramedics, but keep patients safer, too.
The Fire Department recently implemented the Stryker equipment upgrades, representing a signifi cant hazard and risk reduction measure through the implementation of power ambulance cots and power loading systems. The lifting and transport of patients is a necessary physical activity that regularly presents an acute and cumulative risk of injury to Fire Department emergency personnel. The Stryker Power Assisted Stretcher is a powerful battery-powered lifting and lowering system that can hydraulically lift patients weighing up to 700 pounds with the push of a button. The gurney is engineered to reduce physical injuries
and increase the margin of safety for emergency personnel involved in patient transfer by automating mechanical lifting and lowering functions.
The Stryker Power Loading System is designed to support the power stretcher throughout the ambulance loading and unloading process. The load system will mechanically lift and lower the cots into and out of the ambulance reducing the physical load and the risk of isolated and cumulative injuries. Across the Village, shoulder and back injuries sustained while lifting, pushing or pulling a person or training dummy are some of the most costly workers compensation injuries. Fire Department personnel tested multiple lift systems before selecting the Stryker™ Power Assisted Stretcher and Loading System. Lombard Fire Department Lt. Frank Gallione said a representative from Stryker recently traveled to each of the Fire Departments and hosted multiple
